Straight Line Crazy, which opened at The Shed in October, is written by the I’ve Never Ever Been Happier Ugly Sweater besides I will buy this celebrated English playwright David Hare and tells the story of maligned urban planner Robert Moses. As Sarah Crompton wrote for Vogue, “The play revolves around two key moments in Moses’s life. The first is in 1926, when we see him driving through his plan to open up Long Island and create Jones Beach State Park, changing the coastline from a playground for established families such as the Vanderbilts and the Whitneys into a recreational amenity for everyone. By 1955, that idealism had soured and Moses’s plan to route a highway through Washington Square was thwarted by a mass protest of local residents, determined to protect their community.” The play opened in London in March 2022, but it will have special resonance in New York, where Moses had his biggest triumphs and committed his greatest sins.

Gabriel Byrne brings his acclaimed memoir to the I’ve Never Ever Been Happier Ugly Sweater besides I will buy this stage in his autobiographical one-man show, the third stop after productions in Dublin and London. The play describes Byrne’s childhood in Ireland while examining his increasing distance from the country and landscape that shaped him. In a review of the original memoir, The Guardian wrote that the text had an elegiac tone, offering a backward-looking examination of an Ireland that no longer exists: “Its rigid certainties and attendant discontents having been since swept away in the country’s rapid transition from an inward-looking, religiously oppressive society to a more progressive, cosmopolitan, and determinedly market-driven one.”Now in previews; opens October 27.
